Here is a quick sound test from one of my three string guitars. Every box has it's own distinct tone. I was very happy with the sound from this box.

Tune Your Cigar Box Guitar

So, you bought, ordered or gifted one of my guitars and you don't know how to tune it. Here is some quick information on tunings. Most of my guitars are becoming three or four string builds. I usually use the top three or four or bottom three or four strings from a standard set of guitar strings. You can use an online guitar tuner like this to help you. This is the one I usually use, because of the ease of the drop-down menu. Here are a few tunings to get you started:

Open G:    D G D D B G
Open  C:   C G C G C E
Open E7:  E G# D E B E

So, depending on which strings you use, depends on which end of that scale you'll be using. You can restring most of my guitars to suit. You may require a new nut. Most of them are removable. A lot of players opt for using strings 5, 4, 3 and 2. And they tune them to an open chord. I hope this helps. If you have any questions, please use the contact form and I will do my best to help. My biggest advice is to experiment until you find your favorite. Right now, mine is E7 with strings 3,2 and 1.
